New York to effectively ban McDonald’s

mcdonalds-Big-MacIf you’re looking to score a Big Mac in New York, you might be out of luck. New regulations proposed in New York would effectively ban McDonald’s from the city.

You may remember not long ago there was an attempt to ban certain sizes of sodas, but ultimately the ban was ruled unconstitutional. Now there is a new approach to safety measures in the Big Apple.

Citing the argument that the food from McDonald’s is just as dangerous if not worse for your health than many illegal drugs, officials are moving to place many of the items on the fast food restaurant’s menu on the prohibited substances list.

The new scheduling of what officials are calling dangerous substances which they claim lead to crime and death, effectively makes it illegal for McDonald’s to operate within the city unless they drastically revamp their menu.

City officials largely refused comment when asked about the effectiveness of such a ban, stating only that “if you peddle dangerous substances in this city, you will prosecuted. The freedom of people to be healthy trumps your right to sell a product.”

America has some pretty good coffee. Just not starbucks. I go to a coffee shop down the way from me at least twice a month to treat myself. It’s called “Rude Awakening” And it’s freakin’ delicious. They actually know how to make a good cup of coffee.

Guess if we are banning unhealthy food in New York. We have to say good bye to the hot dogs as well. Also going to need to shut down all those nice bakeries in NY, because nothing healthy about cake and icing. Need to shut down all the candy shops, And don’t forget the high carb bagels everyone likes to eat. Those will have to be on the list also. Soon all you will be able to eat in NY is lettuce salad without any dressing, and maybe some juice, depending on the calorie count of the fruit.

      • mervie November 11, 2013 at 8:18 pm

that’s not exactly what this is about. If you looked at the ingredients list, McDonalds employs things like mono- and di-glycerides, TBHQ, tertiary butylhydroquinone aka a petroleium dervived product, Dimethylpolysiloxane added as an antifoaming agent (which is a form of silicone used in cosmetics and silly putty), xanthan gum, maltodextrin, Calcium Disodium EDTA, and many more. This law should honestly be nationwide.

      • mervie November 11, 2013 at 8:24 pm

also! when you consider how the human body uses food to literally have its nutrients give our body instructions on how to function, fast food does a heck of a lot more harm than you might imagine. Since food is a source of ‘information’ for the body, eating mcdonalds as compared to organic food is like the equivalent of using a smutty romance novel to fill out an exam on biochemistry. It’s just not going to work! So fast food nowadays is also thus seen as a potential source for cancer.

      • daniel murphy November 12, 2013 at 7:55 am

its more the fact that what you get in McDonalds in one serving is actually out of control. the portion size i to large so that when we do get and appropriate portion we think its too small and there are chemicals that are addictive added in to make you feel good after eating their food which is altering the way you think and making you want to come back for more its not that they should be banned but there sizes should be regulated and cut back to what is appropriate and the chemicals should be banned.

      • Rosco Cooper November 12, 2013 at 9:36 am

I’m never eating there again. Oh what am I saying. I don’t eat there now. I hate the food they serve. It sucks ass. The only time I actually eat it is when I have little money and absolutely no other choice. I’d have to be starving to eat their toxic burgers. I don’t agree with this law, but I don’t like Macdonalds, point blank.

It’s not it about being unhealthy, it’s about the substances they used to make it. Haven’t you heard about pink slime

      • FREE OF GMO November 14, 2013 at 11:55 am

Yeah close them all, then people will stop being so obese and have so many illnesses. In fact, it’s not the actual products the probem but, the ingredients. Stop using GMO’s, raffinated sugar’s, flours and additives etc, and all will be fine : )

Its not just the fact that mcdonalds is nutrionally low and causes major problems, but most of the food isn’t even real. Their hamburger patty only contains 8% beef. A bagel is nowhere near as bad, maybe if it isn’t made with HFCS and gmos.

    • Jacob September 25, 2013 at 4:38 am Reply

by that logic drugs should be legal seeing as a dealer on the corner doesn’t infringe on anyone’s rights either. drug dealers, on the other hand, aren’t using known psychological techniques to draw in customers.

      • Kyle September 25, 2013 at 6:53 am

All these politicians do is redefine “substances” to fit whatever crazy ass law they want to pass next. The government should not be telling people what diet to have.

      • Dom Vasta September 26, 2013 at 5:52 am

If you think that pharmacies don’t infringe on people’s rights then drug dealers don’t either. The only differences between dealers and pharmacists are purity, proper medical and safety information and legality, but pharmaceuticals kill far more people than illicit drugs.

      • Tom Smith September 29, 2013 at 3:26 pm

Of course drugs should be legal. Why not?

      • MJP11 November 9, 2013 at 2:59 am

If the government shouldn’t tell people what diet to have, then they shouldn’t be obligated to provide healthcare for diet related illnesses.

      • Rosco Cooper November 12, 2013 at 9:33 am

Only one drug should be legal. But it’s hardly a drug if it is grown without chemicals or additives.

      • Jake November 20, 2013 at 5:48 pm

Drug dealers don’t infringe on anyone’s rights you dumbass…

Can all the people opposed to this seriously not handle not having McDonalds in their lives? If obesity didn’t affect one out of every 3 people in the United States, McDonalds wouldn’t have a market to sell to. You’re right, we can’t blame McDonalds, but do we have to power as a nation to do something about it? Yes.

    • Kyle September 25, 2013 at 6:59 am Reply

It’s not about losing the McDonalds. It wouldn’t affect me since I don’t live in New York, and I don’t eat there much, but it’s about Americas right to choose what we eat. If they’re gonna be fat slobs that’s up to them. I have a right to not be JACKED up on caffeine so I don’t drink 10 cups of coffee or redbull. The government doesn’t ban it.

    • DM September 25, 2013 at 11:17 pm Reply

See, I love me some McDonald’s. I’m a 5’10 guy who weighs 140 pounds, and I eat there usually once a week–Sunday lunch, before my softball game. I get a Big Mac and a large Diet Coke, no fries, and that comes out to exactly 550 calories. That’s a pretty low calorie lunch. It’s the people who grab two Big Macs with a family-sized bucket of fries, three regular Cokes, an iced coffee with whipped cream, and then go to Dairy Queen after.

I just don’t understand what problem our “nation has the power” to solve. People are too fat? Raise their healthcare premiums and tell them to put down the fork and go for a run. Why do I have to eat food I don’t like, and pay significantly more for some wilted salad than I do for my delicious $3 Big Mac, because people can’t act like adults and exercise self-control?

      • Danii September 26, 2013 at 12:11 am

Diet coke has aspartame in it and your Big Mac isn’t even real food and is full of poison. Calorie count has nothing to do with how healthy food is………

      • JD September 27, 2013 at 4:18 pm

Calories have nothing to do with ‘healthiness.’ Gasoline is low in calories, but drinking a little bit could easily kill you. The fact that you think Diet cola is ‘healthier’ because there’s no calories, shows just how uniformed you are. The quality of their food is terrible, there are tons of additives, and nasty stuff in there that no one knows about. The main ingredient in Taco Bell ‘cheese’ is actually the main ingredient in ‘industrial adhesive.’ And they add a mild laxative to all their food because your body literally can’t process that ‘food.’ It doesn’t matter how little calories that food has, it’s got garbage ingredients that are terrible for your body. McDonalds, being ‘bad food’ doesn’t have to do with calories or people getting fat, it has to do with the poisons they add to their food and GMO products which have been banned in several European countries.

      • Jonathan October 30, 2013 at 5:22 pm

HOLY SHIT, I couldn’t stop laughing at Danii and JD’s comments.
        Danii:
        http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17828671
Also, that’s why he said calories (quantitative) and not healthy (qualitative).

        JD:
Calories has EVERYTHING to do with weight loss. Notice how OP never said anything about healthiness of the food. Here, let me put it in simpler terms (since you don’t seem to grasp published medical journals):
If a bottle can hold 8 oz of any liquid, does it matter what liquid goes in it? NO. If you pour too much liquid it overflows (weight gain), if you don’t fill it up your body will have to fill the deficit of liquid (weight loss).

      • conrad November 13, 2013 at 2:45 am

apart form making me feel sick, yes ive tried a few MD burgers, not really a meat burger to be honest though. Don’t ban them but make them advertise correctly, we sell 2% meat in our burgers not fit for animal consumption until blasted by ammonium! most of the world doesn’t worry if Americans are killing themselves, but surly if you are been fed pig swill even if its made to taste ok something should be done to look after your families especially your children where MD spends vast amounts of money advertising to them.

Please read and understand before citing useless opinions.

    • Get_Informed November 9, 2013 at 1:39 pm Reply

They are not banning the substances. If the substances were banned, then all fast food chains would be required to change their ingredients (which I am ALL for). The fight should be against the shit that is in your food that is hidden, i.e. Puss that is in all dairy products, bugs in most red food coloring, beef and chicken from sick animals pumped with steroids and hormones. All of these substances SHOULD be banned, or at least clearly labeled. But ALL fast food companies use these, not just McDonalds.

But it is those sweet’s that they eat every day, no matter what time it is they eat and eat and eat all day long. The government is trying real hard to bring back dictation and one day we will have another civil war on our hand’s. But this time it will be the people against our army and government. Actually, in the US it isn’t illegal to eat human flesh. However, the act of desecration of a corpse, and/or possibly murder are crimes and may be related to a cannibalistic act.

With signed documentation, a consenting partner, and no death caused by it; you could more than likely get away with legally eating someone’s flesh without ramifications from the judicial system.

I never been to New York, but somebody is getting paid bribes, or something to kick Mc Donald s down, because McDonalds may have been threatened to pay some money, or get banned from NY.How is a city going to ban one business that might be high in calories, but you know the other places are doing the samething? Bet if we did the research, we could find plenty of restaurants, serving the same kind of food. Bet NY isn’t chasing them down keeping people safe.
This got to be about some money, corruption, blackmail. If I where in NY I do the research, play superman, ask McDonald’s owners if umm they have any would be blackmailers that if the right person where to accidentally trip fall over some proof, they might save McDonalds, and get paid.
I mean come on, if its health, have doctors order people over a certain weight, not be allowed by law to eat there. NYC can open up health restaurants where people of a certain weight can eat, chaching $$$ everybody wins.

Well Americans exercising their right to choose what they eat is all good and well but according to statics these big fast food companies have a way of influencing them to make bad decisions when comes to their health, simply because its more profitable for them to do so also fast and convenient for the buyer.. The gov is doing the responsible thing because all this bad health is taking it’s toll on our society, Diabetes, obesity , cholesterol, etc. Big fast food companies is herding people in the wrong direction and making millions off it just like the tobacco industry , I applaud the gov for not turning a blind eye on this subject. Some of you just might end up loosing weight and feeling great in the process. I will also add that years ago fast food became popular because it was cheap, but now you can buy a healthier chef cooked meal at a restaurant for the same price of a Meal at Mc donalds , so obviously we ‘ve been played and we should take our health back.

I think this is stupid and dangerous. We live in a freedom country. We should have the right to choose what we out into our bodies. McDOnald’s is no more bad than any other fast food out there. The government should not tell us what foods we can and can’t eat. They don’t have the right and this gives them way too much control of our lives. THAT is far more dangerous than any fast food crap. To much of anything is a bad thing. NOBODY puts a gun to our heads saying we have to eat there. It’s our choice even if we see their advertisements. It’s free will and fast food places should just be left alone.

Those who say it’s about freedom to choose – are you aware of the ways in which animals are brutalized so their torture can turn a profit for McDonald’s? What choice do they have? This is especially alarming considering the fact that humans can thrive without eating animals or their products. If you can’t abstain, what about minimization? If there was minimization, factory farming, arguably started by Mcdonald’s, wouldn’t exist. We all agree that factory farming is wrong so how is Mcdonald’s still in business?

If they would just take a different approach, they could have that stuff banned altogether for animal cruelty, inhumanity toward workers, failure to meet health standards, etc. I’d be all for that…But banning it because “people should have the freedom to be healthy”? Give me a break. That’s like banning meat so the people have the “freedom to be vegetarian”.

If we stopped subsidizing commodity corn and soy and subsidized actual food, the price of junk food and soda would reflect the actual cost of production, healthy foods would cost less, and people might eat less crap. Fast food tends to adversely impact a person’s health. So, not only should it not be subsidized, but it may make sense for there to be a tax similar to the tax on cigarettes, to compensate for the incredible strain that poor diets puts on the healthcare system – a cost that is shared by all of us.

It should be required for the company to explain in great detail what is in the food they are selling, and our duty to find out what these things are. The truth is, we a nation of ignorance, neglect, deceit and indifference, in regard to what we eat. This is ludicrous. How can people not see what this law would actually represent? McDonald’s isn’t why people are overweight. Lack of jobs and a non livable minimum wage, combined with poor education and the rising costs of food (been to a supermarket recently?) are the big issues here, and what drive the fast food markets. So rather than address any of THAT…let’s just ban the food and take away yet another of our citizens’ rights. I love how some people are so weak that the solution is simply to not have the choice. And do you think it stops at McDonald’s? There’s Burger King, Wendy’s, White Castle, KFC, Popeye’s…think any of those might be contributing to the problem? Shall we allow the government to ban ALL of them? Do all who support this nonsense have the money to shop exclusively at Whole Foods? Wake up people. Say no to this…or be ready for what’s next. You can be sure that costs of food and taxes are only going to increase…stop letting the government trick you into thinking they’re helping you by limiting your choices. Insist they make laws that will actually address the causes of these problems. Band aids aren’t permanent and healing doesn’t begin till the band aid is ripped off.

Also, the drug comparison is completely illogical, and becoming more irrelevant as debate rages on the place of government towards drug laws anyway.

  92. FuriousGreg November 12, 2013 at 11:40 pm Reply

I think some people here need to step back and try to understand whats really going on here.

First, governments have the authority to protect people from dangerous things, we as voters gave them this and for the most part we agree with the laws they come up with. Some examples are traffic lights and stop signs: we accept that it’s safer to have these to regulate traffic so we don’t get run over by cars. We also accept water and air purity standards, safety regulations, speed limits etc. because our lives are better with them than without them. So save the freedom BS unless your ready to give up things like safe drinking water.

Second, this is a poorly written article that gives almost no relevant information, doesn’t tell us anything about what the proposed “ban” really says, and does absolutely no research or present any information on the foods that McDs might actually not be able to sell or why. Sh*tty reporting.

Lastly, this ban is not actually a ban on McDs but a ban on many of the additives they use in their products. Most of which they only use because it’s convenient and profitable for them to do so, without regard to the customer’s health. You can go to a local burger joint and get a burger without all the cr*p McD’s puts in their food and so you have the “freedom” to eat yourself into an early grave all you want. What the government wants to do is to stop the use of these additives that are being shown to cause many avoidable health problems. Health problems, BTW, that we all have to pay for treating in higher insurance premiums and taxes even if we don’t eat this cr*p.

So the question isn’t why is the government taking away or “freedom” to eat what we want, their not, but why some people are against stopping the filling of their food with dangerous additives that cost us all in both money and lives. We’re happy with safe water, but for some reason we loose our sh*t when it comes to dangerous chemicals in our food. Ridiculous.

If it was as bad as ppl say it would have been banned along time ago we do have “healthy codes n officials” employed by the government..so maybe u should think about that! Also its ppls choices on what they what to do/eat or put into thier bodies..just as it is in drug use..they ban all the drugs bad for u..but yet ppl still used them..and if they were that bad the government woulda banned them right alone with those drugs banned..come on..its called free will ppl!

Okay, so let me get this straight if I buy Micky D’s in New Jersey and drive up to New York I’ll get arrested. Oh lovely.

Mcdonalds doesn’t handcuff people and force them to eat their food.

If they ban Micky D’s, ban ALL other fast food joints, bakeries, grocery stores, and anywhere else that sells food. Only unless they sell lettuce and water.

Oh wait ban the lettuce sellers too because they’ll likely have pesticides on it and the water won’t be clean.

Then everyone will be fine because in place of all that there will be chemicals in place of food to prevent starvation.

    It’s all staged. Honestly. đź¦

The logic some are using on this string is interesting – If McDonald’s sells chemicals that resembles food and tastes like food, that seems to be OK with the many commenting. Even when those chemicals can be deadly.

I see a lot of problems with this proposal, first of all there are way more dangerous products on the market then mcdonalds, tobacco products and hard liquor wich are addictive and highly toxic substances, also Chinese fish and other Chinese food or even non food products, what about soda pop, candy, chocolate bars, I can give become a diabetic from living of pop candy and chocolate bars so maybe we should ban them, but wait then I could by sugar from the grocery store and eat that, guess we gotta ban sugar to, where does it end? we cant safety the world, I feel I should have the right to eat junk food once and a while, everything in moderation, mcdonalds isn’t going to kill you if you eat their a couple times a year, alcohol can though look at all the teenage deaths families torn apart from drunk driving fatalities oh but lets ban mcdonalds?, I don’t need the government telling me what I can or cant eat I’m a big boy I can figure it out, as individuals and parents its up to us to eat and live healthy and to teach our kids to do the same, Anderson the spider Silva is the greatest mixied martial arts fighter of all time, defended his ufc belt roughly 15 times, he worked at mcdonalds as a teenager and loves mcdolands food, he don’t eat it often though only after his weigh ins of every fight, its his superstition, he eats to big mac after every weigh in which is 24 hours before his championship fights, he had the belt into his 40’s, one of the greatest athletes of all time, see moderation

  117. You're all Morons November 14, 2013 at 4:41 pm Reply

No one is arguing that by eating McDonald’s you will become fat automatically and that by banning it they are trying to stop an obesity problem. They are trying to make it illegal for them to put poison in your food and most of you moron’s are completely missing the entire point of the law. Its not to stop you from eating McDonald’s, its to stop McDonald’s (and hopefully all fast food chains) to stop putting shit in your food that is literally poison. If you found that your favorite high class restaurant was putting arsenic in your food, you would want someone to stop this from happening and you wouldn’t just sit around bitching about how the government is trying to tell you what to eat when they close down your favorite restaurant for knowingly poisoning you.
No one is telling you you can’t eat McDonald’s. McDonald’s is being told they can no longer poison you if they want to continue to sell you their food. It’s that fucking simple.

  127. SS November 15, 2013 at 4:06 pm Reply

I’m not sure why this article singles out McDonald’s….a ban like this would be applicable to ANY fast food restaurant. Burger King, Wendy’s, etc. would all have to oblige.

Then where does it stop? What is defined as “unhealthy food”. Local businesses that serve burgers, hot dogs, fries, ribs, etc. are shut down. Is that really a solution?

  128. collins November 16, 2013 at 1:38 pm Reply

I understand that it is unhealthy which would lead to death eventually but how in the heck does it increase violence/crime? People point to everything nowadays as an increase in violence and it’s crap!

  129. Paul November 16, 2013 at 8:14 pm Reply

If you thought that they would be putting ‘Big Macs’ on the controlled substances list you’re an idiot. Think about this for a second, despite this article being written to make you all jump and scream for your civil liberties, buying a Big Mac or anything else from McDonald’s won’t be illegal, however, McDonald’s will be forced to not put terrible chemicals and additives in their food which means you’ll be able to enjoy your burger without having poisons and carcinogens running through your veins.
You Americans that constantly jump to defending your rights and civil liberties, before you take a moment to realize that what is being proposed may make you better off; will be the death of your own, beloved country.

“The freedom of people to be healthy trumps your right to sell a product.” And what about the freedom to choose what I want to eat? If I wanna eat unhealthy that’s my choice, my freedom. Before you know it this country will be nothing more than a wasteland with minimal rights. People who support this, what do you get out if this? Assuming your not eating mcdonalds, this doesn’t effect you in any way so why waste your time with it? People will never understand what it truly means to have freedom.

A lot of haters up in here. But seriously, this is lame. Laws like this have no place in our legal system. Self regulation is far more appropriate. No one is forcing anyone to eat it. And the poverty argument holds no weight anymore. These days fast food is a lot more expensive than buying some groceries. And talk all the shit you want on them, every once in the while I’m in the mood for a Big Mac and fries. Should I be deprived because a bunch of fat asses can’t control themselves and are unable to hold themselves accountable for their own actions? I don’t think that sounds fair at all.
